By definition in Black's Law Dictionary, a lawyer is "a person learned in the law; as an attorney, counsel or solicitor; a person licensed to practice law.” The history of lawyers and legal representation can be traced back to the Greeks in 5th century BC. Since the Greeks, the system of legal representation has spread to the four corners of the globe.
In Cambodia, the formal structure of legal profession dates from French 1932 administration period. In its early days, the French provided basic training in Law and representation: Practitioners had neither stamp or gown, their training designed to help the poor and underprivileged.
Today, Cambodia has a Bar Associate, defined professional standards, infrastructure and oversight processes. The legal community is supported by professional training at Cambodia's Universities and law colleges, who provide courses to advanced degree level. The profession is free and independent, and not under any political power.
